2022 in Music: 100 Best Tracks

Last year I rather naively thought I'd summon the tenacity to write about one hundred songs individually. I gave up after about forty. So if I do indeed run out of things to say and just hastily copy and paste a ranking for the final half (or more), please forgive me.  2022 was... a lot to take in. Musically? Not so bad, really - I gave those fifty albums an extremely high score after all. I do think pop singles suffered a bit of a dry spell for most of the year, however, and found myself scrimmaging for newcomers as established acts continued to stumble. You really should have done better, Nicki Minaj/ Calvin Harris/ Grimes/ Rihanna/ Harry Styles. No I couldn't go through all of these write-ups without mentioning how shite Harry's House was. It's been bugging me. Sorry. As always, this is all incredibly arbitrary. Some days I will want to listen to number #93 and think that #30 is a COMPLETE waste of time. Music is fickle, and so are my moods. 100 - "Little Both

Alright, not going to waste more time apologising for the death of this blog, just going to get straight to the point. I listened to 142 albums and EPs this year apparently, and trawled through every New Music Fridays like an addict in search of a rush, so... if I missed anything, there's not really any excuse. I have a top 50 albums and top 100 songs as always, deluding myself as if I'm Pitchfork or something. Here's a list of everything I listened to but wasn't good enough for the list, apparently, with a score attached* Syd - Broken Hearts Club - 8 Taylor Swift - Midnights - 8 Superorganism - World Wide Pop - 8 Angel Olsen - Big Time - 8 Animal Collective - Time Skiffs - 8 Charli XCX - Crash - 8 Empress Of - Save Me EP - 8 Plains - I Walked With You A Ways - 8 Sabrina Carpenter - Emails I Cannot Send - 7.9 Conan Gray - Superache - 7.9 Aurora - The Gods We Can Touch - 7.9 Mura Masa - Demon Time - 7.9 Yaya Bey - Remember Your North Star - 7.8 Fletcher - Girl of My Dr

2021 in Review: 100 Best Tracks

This one's going to be even more arbitrary than the albums one I did last week, so hold onto your hats! 2021 wasn't a stellar year for pop. There was something of a cruel irony in last year producing excellent singles and albums from the likes of Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, Jessie Ware and Grimes that deserved to have their hits pulsing through sweaty nightclubs, where the only risk of contamination came in the bathroom stalls. This year... sure, there were some gems, but nowhere near on the same scale. Introspection seemed to dominate this year, with Adele and ABBA spearheading the biggest pop moments. Comebacks were often disappointing: Normani's hit with Cardi B might prove popular with some but I found it to be a monotonous waste of time, Shakira's Don't Wait Up was inanely catchy for a brief period but had no right being a lead single, and there were similar damp squibs for Camila Cabello, Demi Lovato and Rita Ora. Contrary to all this preamble, I do
