This week's new singles.
So there's something for everyone this week.
Arguably the most anticipated release of the year, Gaga's back. Whether that's to your chagrin or delight is irrelevant and probably as ever-changing as mine. Upon the release of her lyrics a few weeks ago, I winced a little. It's cheesy, it's false and whilst she may be tolerant and all that jazz - it's not going to change anything in gay rights other than perhaps give them attention.
So the track was released today. And it's...overwhelmingly disappointing. Within minutes there were fans and critics alike citing an uncanny resemblance to Madonna's "Express Yourself" and I can't help but agree - the sheer tune of the song is more past-it than pastiche. But this aside, there's a glaring lack of tune that I was hoping would blur out the corny lyrics. Have I given up on GaGa? Not even close - here's hoping for a much better album. 3/10
On a similarly internet-shattering note, The Strokes released their eagerly-anticipated comeback with a free single 'Under Cover of Darkness' on Wednesday, crashing their server for about an hour. But the uncertainty and technical glitches were worth it - the track seamlessly picks off where they left off, with rich guitar riffs and a stomper tune perhaps most akin to their Room on Fire sound. It's as catchy as 'Someday'. 9/10
I've long awaited the follow-up to Fleet Foxes' breakthrough self-titled debut album and this was the first glimpse of it, 'Helplessness Blues' released as a free download at the end of January. It's full of harmonic folk vocals and a pacy, cute and relaxing acoustic vibe. It's as if they never went away. Lovely stuff. 8/10
I've never really appreciated Patrick Wolf until this year - the release of 'Time of My Life' was a real turning point for me. But 'The City' is released as the second single soon. It's an earnest romantic tune that's uplifting and cute - but doesn't carry much weight. 6/10
And finally I must tip my head to a friend. Emily Biggs, someone I've known since 2006/7, is beyond lovely and as a member of new girlband Parade I'm obliged to support. The single 'Louder' has already racked up almost 200,000 views on YouTube and is brewing hype - and it's a devilishly catchy tune. I wish them the best of luck, and whilst they're never going to change art or music, the track is great fun and pure pop goodness. 7/10
