I think it's fair to say that only two mega-popstars from the late 90s/early 00s are still enjoying the same, if not bigger, success than they were back then: Beyonce and P!nk. Oh there've been a multitude of those who've since passed or retired or taken up residency on talent show judging panels, but these two ladies continue to impress the critics and charts respectively. Last year's Walk Me Home was P!nk's twentieth top-ten hit in the United Kingdom and it's honestly baffling that she hasn't gone the same way as your Kelly Clarksons or Christina Aguilerae; two equally talented powerhouses of the same era that couldn't buy a hit lately. Little Boots - Nocturnes

I must prefix this review with major aggrievance at the absence of 2012's marvellous disco single Headphones . Considering this record's so centred around the supposed strengths of house music I guess I can see its omission as necessary, as it's more of a discopop song, but, as I'm about to discover, it's far stronger than the majority available here. It seems absurd in hindsight that the BBC awarded Little Boots - real name Victoria Hesketh - the 'Sound of 2009' prize. In a year that saw such indie-crossover juggernauts as Florence + the Machine, the xx, Mumford and Sons, La Roux, Passion Pit, Empire of the Sun and... oh yeah... Lady GaGa (!) it was a little bit of an odd decision to give the title to the rather safe, homely-looking pop prot é g é . Washed Out - Within and Without

Just when you think you've heard enough synthpop this year to last a lifetime, along comes a debut record that could, quite arguably, be the very best of the lot. Georgian (as in the state, not the country, although I've now got a craving for some Eastern European synths) soloist Washed Out has already amassed some considerable praise for this, his first record, after a handful of EPs and free downloads. But for Ernest Greene, this success has possibly come out of nowhere. And let's face it, it's rather difficult to stand out as an electronic artist at the moment. Even down to the fundamental pop successes where seemingly the least talented are most rewarded (Guetta, Chase and Status) but in the indie environment too, where even I (and I consider myself to be in the shallow end of the online pool) have probably reviewed 50 electronic albums this year.
