2022 in Music: 100 Best Tracks

  Last year I rather naively thought I'd summon the tenacity to write about one hundred songs individually. I gave up after about forty. So if I do indeed run out of things to say and just hastily copy and paste a ranking for the final half (or more), please forgive me.  2022 was... a lot to take in. Musically? Not so bad, really - I gave those fifty albums an extremely high score after all. I do think pop singles suffered a bit of a dry spell for most of the year, however, and found myself scrimmaging for newcomers as established acts continued to stumble. You really should have done better, Nicki Minaj/ Calvin Harris/ Grimes/ Rihanna/ Harry Styles. No I couldn't go through all of these write-ups without mentioning how shite Harry's House was. It's been bugging me. Sorry. As always, this is all incredibly arbitrary. Some days I will want to listen to number #93 and think that #30 is a COMPLETE waste of time. Yuck - Yuck, a review

I must point out that I have a horrific toothache at the moment and as such might be prone to exaggerate any criticisms with this album. It is lucky then that I've decided to go ahead and review something I've been fond of for a few months now - the debut LP of 'Yuck', a band apparently from London, New York and Hiroshima . Someone less tactful than I might make a coarse 'this album is explosive!' joke. Um...anyway. Two of the founders were in Cajun Dance Party, a band I wasn't particularly a fan of. The immediate impression I got from opener 'Get Away' was Strokes. Stroke stroke strokes. It's got that New York vibe about it that's propelled Casablancas, not to mention Sonic Youth, The Drums and Velvet Underground. It's got that same attention to detail, fetishizing killer riffs and subtly distorted sounds aimed at the hearts of indie fans worldwide. My Top 50 Albums of the Year - Part Five

#10 - "Gloss Drop", Battles Genuinely one of the most fun records I've heard all year - dizzyingly energetic and full of weird grunts and guest appearances that all mash together to make one gooey, unusual mess (mess can be a good thing, right?) And as usual the drumming is superb. #9 - "Conatus", Zola Jesus For someone to release an album every year is quite admirable, but for them to improve in quality is quite unexpected: her previous two releases, as well as the majority of her extra singles and EPs, have often treaded too close on the line between art and boredom, but Conatus reigns in the hazy edges and polishes them into excellent, beautiful songs. #8 - "Biophilia", Björk In a year where I fell more and more in love with her, this seemed to polarise critics.
